Directors Ian Cook and Ken Taylor, authors of the ASEAN-COCI-AusHeritage publication ‘A contemporary guide to cultural mapping – An ASEAN-Australia perspective’ (CMG) were invited to attend the first conference on cultural mapping in Southeast Asia.

2013 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards – Sept 2013

The project to restore the heritage significant Maryborough Railway Station (Victoria) has been recognised with the Award of Merit in the 2013 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. The Heritage Architects for the project are RBA Architects + Conservation Consultants, directed by AusHeritage vice-chairperson Roger Beeston.

AusHeritage member visits Jakarta – June 2013

An article by Michael Bachelard, Indonesian correspondant, appeared in Melbourne’s ‘The Age’ newspaper 4 July 2013 highlighting the plight of many aging and crumbling buildings in Jakarta, Indonesia.

AusHeritage member Pruce Pettman recently visited the capital and was quoted as saying there are “art deco, influences of Frank Lloyd Wright and also back to the Dutch influences in the late 18th century, including shop houses and the like. It’s a wonderful collection of buildings and they are all still there.’‘

PAM Award 2013 collaboration – May 2013

At the recent annual Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia Awards (PAM – Institute of Architects in Malaysia) a collaboration between AusHeritage and the local Penang team, arkitek urbanisma sdn bhd, were awarded second place (Silver) for Excellence in Architecture, in Category 7 – Conservation, for the restoration of the copper dome, roof and associated works at Masjid Kapitan Keling, Penang.

Australian heritage experts in Kolkata for joint forum on Acharya Bhavan – 12 April 2013

A three member heritage delegation from Australia were in Kolkata on 12th April to participate in a joint forum with the J C Bose Trust. The forum discussed best practice approaches as Acharya Bhavan gets converted to a National Science Heritage Museum. Acharya Bhavan, the 110 year old home of Jagadish Chandra Bose was built in 1902 and stands as a reflection of the Indian scientific endeavours as well as a historic site that hosted several Indian legends including Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi. The museum is currently open on a limited basis to the public and the Indian Ministry for Culture had announced that it will be converted to a National Science Heritage Museum.

ASEAN Cultural Mapping handbook launched in Canberra

A major ASEAN guide book on cultural mapping, co-authored by Australian heritage experts Mr. Ian Cook and Professor Ken Taylor was launched by the Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Peter Varghese AO, in Canberra May 6, 2013. The first copy was presented to the Ambassador for Philippines H.E. Belen F. Anota in in the presence of the authors, the Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic, The Australian National University, Professor Marnie Hughes-Warrington, Assistant Secretary-General, the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community, H.E. Alicia Bala, Chairman of AusHeritage Mr. Vinod Daniel and Ambassadors and High Commissioners of Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam. High level representation was also present from Laos, Thailand, Timor-Leste and China.
