AusHeritage chairperson, Vinod Daniel, discusses six major challenges facing museums in India. These challenges include appointing a permanent director; be given a degree of autonomy; upgrading the staff selection process; make museums more attractive for audiences; prioritise the collection; and bring intangible aspects to the fold.

Mr Daniel maintains that museums are necessary for efficient nation building. The challenges of audience and community involvement need to be addressed and choosing best practice from other countries. The extent to which repatriation of objects from abroad was also discussed, with Mr Daniel suggesting that if objects are properly maintained, traveling exhibitions may be an alternative to repatriation.
