It extends the opportunities for materials conservators, architects, archaeologists, curators, heritage managers, guidebook and catalogue writers, and university academics with skills in museology, historical research, education program development, etc., for professional development and to sell their expertise internationally.

Australian expertise in conservation, museums and education is well recognised world-wide. Already there have been many individual examples of Australian heritage expertise being applied in other countries.

Examples include underwater archaeology techniques developed for work in the Murray River by the Western Australian Maritime Museum being applied in the muddy rivers of south-east Asia; and staff of the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney providing advice and consultancy services to the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

A business or enterprise network like AusHeritage exists to help individual practitioners to work together to seize opportunities which might be more than they could individually manage. AusHeritage will assist specialists to form teams to tackle large-scale complex heritage projects overseas.

AusHeritage will develop opportunities for earning export income from the international application of Australian expertise in caring for heritage. AusHeritage grew from a series of workshops and meetings initiated in 1994 and funded by the Australian Heritage Commission (now the Australian Heritage Council) with the Department of Communication, Information Technology and the Arts.

A database has been established listing details of several hundred Australian heritage workers. Seed funding to develop the network was provided by the Cultural Industry Development Program (CIDP) and the Australian Heritage Commission.
