PAM Award 2013 collaboration - May 2013

At the recent annual Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia Awards (PAM – Institute of Architects in Malaysia) a second place award (Silver) for Excellence in Architecture, in Category 7 – Conservation, was won for the restoration of the copper dome, roof and associated works at Masjid Kapitan Keling, Penang. This effort was through the collaboration between AusHeritage members Bruce Pettman and Mary Knaggs from the NSW Government Architect’s Office (GAO) and the local Malaysia team from George Town, Penang – Arkitek Urbanisma Sdn Bhd. Architects are invited to submit their entries (completed jobs both within and outside Malaysia) for the awards.

There were three shortlisted entries under this category. The adaptive re-use boutique hotel (Oasis Hotel) at Love Lane, Penang was awarded first (gold) while a commendation went to the restoration of St. Georges Church at Light Street, also in Penang.

The following citation is from the juries (a mix of Malaysian prominent architects, academician, an architectural photographer and writer):

“The stellar effort lies in the surgical approach that repaired and restored the copper dome. it reflects the thorough research and technical investigation that has gone into the restoration process. Prudent design thinking also guided the effort to blend the dome maintenance access into the existing roof-scape.”
