The Sovereign Hill Museums Association

Sovereign Hill is an Australian outdoor museum, situated in Ballarat, Victoria. Opened in 1970, its purpose as a museum is to inspire an understanding of the significance of the central Victorian gold rushes in Australia’s national story and at its “Narmbool” rural annexe, the importance of land, water and biodiversity in Australia’s future.

Sovereign Hill is run by The Sovereign Hill Museums Association, a not-for-profit, community-based organisation. The Association is controlled by a Board elected by its members and serving in a voluntary capacity. Management is in the hands of a Chief Executive Officer and professional staff. Over 350 people are employed and their work is supported by almost 300 volunteers who help bring the outdoor museum to life and assist the adjacent Gold Museum in its curatorial work and tour guiding. It is internationally known as a living history museum, with a strong emphasis on working machinery and exhibits, costumed interpreters and visitor participation .
